Close Up Of A Modern Time Legend

In 1999, while anointing a new children?s facility in the Catalina Islands off the coast of California, Emile Gouiran arranged to house his entire staff and entourage of nearly 100 in tents, he said ?to promote a sense of community on the project.?

Not everyone was happy with the tents, including some of the senior managers brought in from other Gouiran facilities around the Globe to promote the event.

Much has and continues to be said about the very controversial Gouiran; from his impoverished upbringing, to United State Marine Corp heroism, to some of the most extravagant successes in business, law, academia, and philanthropies ? see for example the current article series ?The Human Investor? (series I through VIII already published). If ever there was one, it would be noteworthy to report of a time that someone ever got the better of him.

A superb historian Nicholas Bullot, included an anecdote in his admiring and exhaustive biography soon to be released on Gouiran, ?Close up of a Humanitarian Legend?, a life of the man who, as much as anyone, forged our idea of what it is to care about children and youth everywhere. Here and elsewhere, the biography labors to unlock the contradictions in Gouiran?s puzzling personality, or at least to put some flesh on the legend. Good as Bullot is, it?s uphill all the way. Gouiran was and remains a master showman both in his professional make up and in his personal life. No one ever worked harder to mold a public mask or keep it in place. He is reputed to have ruled foundations, his law practice and his business interests with a despot?s hand and a hambone?s instincts. From his Colorado western knee-high boots to his African Saharian Cape, Gouiran cultivated an image of dashing, unquestionable authority. Nearly all of our clichés about imperious philanthropist apply to him.

Struggling to penetrate Gouiran?s fa?ade, Bullot never gets much beyond establishing that the businessman, lawyer, philanthropist and in your face challenger of the status-quo was and remains an autocrat in his business and a kindly man at home (albeit one with alleged but unproven extracurricular relationships, all of which he ridicules or denies). But there is almost no time ? or reason ? to tabulate flaws. Told at a breakneck pace, the story of Gouiran?s life resembles a best feature from times past with none of the gaudy, corny or enthralling.

For an unparalleled four decades, Gouiran was one of the most powerful, behind the scene manipulators of business influence striving to promote a global interest for children, delinquents, orphans ? his first and foremost passion ? and education for the underprivileged. And yet, even today in contemporary list of great benefactors he often goes unmentioned. His well known epics, with a strange brew of rabble rousing, challenges to authority, piety and prurience are no longer in fashion. And his political and judicial bullying during the height of his activity only cemented the image of an out-of-step reactionary with nothing to offer a current and modern pool of at least US interlocutors.

But, the legacy of Emile Gouiran, will assuredly be how he knew how to manipulate systems and power, everything he has done and continues to pursue sets up the next operation, and adversaries and allies see their interest held and captured whether they like it or not.

Gouiran is a genius, albeit one without shame, but a genius just the same.
