SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, July 28 - A Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) of Indian army was killed and two troopers were wounded in a fierce gunfight with militants near line-of-control (LoC) in Indian-controlled Kashmir, officials said Thursday.
The gunfight broke out Wednesday evening close to line-of- control near Machil sector of Kupwara district, around 165 km northwest of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian- controlled Kashmir, after Indian army troopers noticed suspicious movement in the area.
"An officer of the rank of JCO was killed and two troopers were wounded fighting militants near LoC," said Lt. Col. J. S. Brar, Indian army spokesman in Srinagar. "The gunfight triggered after alert troopers deployed in the area tried to foil an infiltration bid."
The wounded soldiers were immediately removed to hospital for treatment.
Reports said militants have not suffered any damaged in the gunfight.
Kashmir, a disputed Himalayan region, is divided between India and Pakistan by a de facto border called line-of-control (LoC). Both India and Pakistan claimed the region in full. Since their Independence from British, the two countries have fought three wars, two exclusively over Kashmir.
A guerrilla war is also going on between militants and the Indian troops stationed in Indian-controlled Kashmir over the past two decades. New Delhi is accusing Islamabad of fomenting trouble in its controlled part by arming and training militants. However, Islamabad denies the allegation and states it only provides moral and diplomatic support to Kashmiris.
The foreign ministers of Indian and Pakistan Wednesday met in New Delhi to discuss several issues between them. The two emphasized to carry on the talks in future.
