A Profile Of Kevin Smith
The director Kevin Smith certainly has a loyal fanbase, and some of his films are cult classics. But he is not your typical director by any stretch of the imagination. So why is he so popular and why can he draw crowds of thousands who come simply to hear him speak about his life? Read on to learn about the life and works of director Kevin SmithSmith first hit the scene with his black and white indie DIY film Clerks. Clerks is about two convenience store clerks in New Jersey as the have fun and just try to get through the day dealing with customers and talking about movies and girls. Smith famously dropped out of film school and used his remaining tuition along with maxing out some credit cards to make Clerks, which aired at sundance and was optioned by Miramax. From there Smith went on to make the film Mallrats, a decidedly 90s tribute to the mall culture in America. While the film was panned by critics, fans found much to love in the film, especially in the performance of Jason Lee.After Mallrats, he made the off-kilter romantic comedy Chasing Amy, a movie about a guy from jersey that gets into a relationship with a lesbian. The film deals with male female relationships as well as the relationships between friends. The film was fairly well received by the mainstream critics. Continuing to make films his own way, with his friends and without a large budget, Smith made Dogma, a hilarious send up of the Christian faith in America. The film deals with people who take faith too literally and thus are unable to be compassionate to others. Of course there are also murderous angels, black apostles, ?hairy? nuns, and plenty of curse words, in classic Smith fashion. The next film he made was Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, what was supposed to be the final film in his Clerks universe. The film had a big budget for a Smith film and follows the two hapless protagonists as they seek to stop a movie from being made about characters based on them, despite the fact that it will make them millions. The film has a huge cast of cameos from previous Smith films, with some actors playing multiple characters. The movie is a fun and humorous road trip movie with ridiculous adventures along the way.Smith?s next movie was Jersey Girl, and proof that he can make a cookie cutter, insipid, and pointless film just like any Hollywood director. Fortunately, he followed it up with Clerks II and Zack and Miri Make a Porno, two hilarious films that hit the mark. Clerks II obviously lives in the same universe as the first film and follows the two protagonists as they deal with live working at a fast food joint and thirtysomethings. He followed these with Cop Out, a run of the mill and ho hum buddy cop movie with Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan. His latest film is Red State, a film about a church reminiscent of the Westburough Baptists. The film is strange, and a bit schlocky, but not bad overall. You can find out more about movies such as Cop Out and actors such as Jason Lee on the internet.
