Are Movie Makers Obsessed With Aliens?
Our culture is fascinated with all the things that science cannot prove. Aliens and the Paranormal are at the top of the list of most loved. Why is this so? What is it about aliens that prompts movie makers to produce these slimy characters as heroes...or mostly, villains? And what prompts us, as consumers and movie patrons, to watch them and support them? Just what is it that makes these flicks so irresistible? Since the 1950?s, non-human forms have been a part of the silver screen making us shriek, laugh, and cry. They have raised our blood pressure and our curiosity, which obviously is not yet sated for the movies are still coming.Anymore, it almost feels like the same movie again and again when it comes to these sort of productions. The aliens are the same, the terror is the same, the killing is the same and the hero lives. There is a difference in plot, of course, but usually one you can figure out early and then you are watching the special effects for entertainment. Is this a slam? No, of course not. Perhaps some of the information collected for the movies has been from abduction survivors. Therefore, your aliens would appear very similar all the time and the terror would feel raw and real. If the movie production statistics prove correct, we are in a lot of trouble as the human race for very few aliens want to be ?friends?. Most are blood thirsty mongrels who wish to destroy all of us. Do we prefer to watch this sort of scenario to prepare us for the worst? Or is it all so far fetched that we go and stare at the screen for that fear factor? Just to simply be scared for a couple of hours...Aliens make the perfect villain, I suppose. They have been made out to be a negative force in our world, many do not believe in their existence so they are not ?real?, therefore causing them physical harm means nothing. These beings become so easy to resent since they do not understand us, nor us them, and they come to us waging war. It is our instinct to defend what is ours against what we do not know. These slimy creatures make the perfect scapegoat. Is it the call of the unknown that pulls writers and producers to the subject? If no one really knows for sure about the species, they are free to explore it completely fictional. There are no boundaries. So if someone were to have a dream that he were flushed down the toilet with a Tyrannosaurus Rex one night, he could wake up and write a screenplay that the main character was being sucked into a vortex in space while battling a strange new kind of alien race and unknowingly ending up in orbit around their world...and thus the story really begins. There is nothing real about that except that he had a dream and interpreted it into being an alien adventure. The kind of story making Hollywood and consumers very happy right now such as Men in Black III or Prometheus.
