Bianna Golodryga Announces Finalists In Gma's Guru Search

Advice segments, or columns, are popular with many different news resources, be them in print, online, or broadcasted on television. These advice pieces are important because they bring a sense of community to the segment and they invite readers or viewers to participate in their own news. Good Morning America, one of the most popular broadcasts on the ABC Network, is currently seeking its own Guru through a less than traditional application process. Bianna Golodryga, a co-anchor for the weekend edition of Good Morning America, reported on the contemporary hiring procedure when she announced the seven finalists in this competition, whose prize is a full-time job as the Good Morning America Guru.

Bianna Golodryga's report included information about every aspect of the competition, from facts about the personal lives of the applicants to details concerning the segment that the winner will host on Good Morning America. The segment, entitled Ask GMA, will be lead by the winner of this competition and will answer questions, sent in by viewers via email and snail mail. The answers will be aired on Good Morning America and will be published online, at the Ask GMA website. For this reason, Bianna Golodryga notes, the winner must be capable of answering tough questions in addition to having a strong online and on-air presence. While not just anyone can handle this job description, Bianna Golodryga reported that 15,000 applicants thought they had the chops.

Now narrowed down to only 7 participants, the competition has taken a rather contemporary turn. In the first online reality job interview to ever be held, these contestants will face-off in daily challenges, called the Guru Daily Duals. During the Duals, applicants will answer a viewer's question, both in video and essay form, and viewers across the country will get to vote on the winner. The last guru standing after these duals will be awarded the title of GMA Guru and will have earned the spot as host of Ask GMA. This interesting hiring platform puts the power of decision in the hands of viewers, not in the hands of high-level executives. Although this is a highly untraditional practice, it makes sense. Viewers will be the ones watching the segment, and contributing to ratings, so they should have some say in who they turn to for advice.

Bianna Golodryga reported that the lucky seven finalists are: Carla Barnhill from Minneapolis, Minnesota; Liz Pryor from Studio City, California; Amy Kean from New York, New York; Cooper Boone from New York, New York; Fran Harris from Dallas, Texas; Bette Alkazian from Westlake Village, California; and Philip Van Munching from Darien, Connecticut.
