Basic Guide To Sony And Cannon Cameras

Whether you are just a casual hobbyist photographer or an experienced enthusiast, there are some clear camera brand front-runners in the photography world. As common household brand names, Canon cameras and Sony cameras are among the most recognized and trusted camera brands in the industry. Both companies offer a broad array of equipment appropriate for all levels of photography knowledge from novice to professional.

Canon Cameras

Canon cameras are divided into two distinct product lines: the point-and-shoot models carry the name PowerShot and the SLR (single-lens reflex) models carry the name EOS. The PowerShot digital point-and-shoot models are much cheaper and simpler to use than the SLR models. Listed below are a few examples of each product line across a range of price points.

Digital

The Canon PowerShot A810 shoots 16MP picture quality and costs range from about $90-$120. While it features very basic functions and settings, the 16MP quality is quite high for this price range. The Canon PowerShot SX230 HS is a good mid-priced and pocketable option. This camera sells for about $220-$350; it shoots HD video and it has built in GPS for route mapping and geotagging photos while traveling. The Canon PowerShot ELPH 310 HS is priced at $360. It shoots 12.1MP photos, is ultra slim and compact, and has a pretty impressive 8x zoom.

Digital SLR

The Canon EOS Rebel T3 costs about $400-$600. This 12.2MP camera is a nice entry into the SLR Rebel line. It is user-friendly, has an extended battery-life, and omits some of the bells and whistles that complicate other more sophisticated models. The Canon EOS Rebel T2i model goes for about $550-$870 and shoots 18MP photos. The Canon EOS 5D Mark III is one of their more professional models. It shoots an impressive 22.3MP quality and will cost you anywhere from $2,870-$3,650.

Sony Cameras

Like Canon, Sony also has models across all experience levels and price points. Sony's compact versus SLR product lines are not as easily distinguishable as Canon's. Sony cameras have both compact and SLR models within the same product lines. Again, below are some examples of both Sony's compact and SLR models ranging from the most affordable to the most expensive.

Digital

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX30V shoots 18.2MP, features an impressive 20x digital zoom, and costs around $360-$420. The Sony Alpha NEX-5N is thin and lightweight, and features full HD video recording, 16.1MP quality and 10-frame-per-second capability. This pocket digicam offers a ton of functionality, but it will cost you as much as $600-$1,000. The Sony Alpha NEX-7 is a powerhouse of a pocket camera, boasting a whopping 24.3MP and selling for around $1,120-$1,200.

Digital SLR

The Sony Alpha SLT-A35 is smaller than most SLR models, but still conveniently has SLR lens compatibility. Its translucent mirror supports phase-time autofocusing which allows you to photographically track moving objects. It shoots 16.2MP photos, can shoot up to 7 frames per second, and costs around $560-$700. The Sony Alpha SLT-A57 shoots 16.2MP pictures, has a 3x zoom, and is priced at $690-$800. Finally, Sony dips its toes into professional territory with the Sony Alpha SLT-A77. This $1,020-$1,400 camera shoots at 24.3MP, can capture 12 frames per second, and is still pretty compact.
