Austin Museums

Austin is known for its live music, but the city also has a rich culture of museums and art galleries. The Austin Museum Partnership is a good place to find information and resources about Austin's diverse museum offerings. The following is a mere glimpse of the Austin museum scene.

Only in Texas
The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin gives visitors a larger than life Texas experience. From the Imax theater to the special effects in the Texas Spirit Theater, this museum educates visitors with three floors-worth of fun, interactive exhibits.

Before becoming part of the United States, Texas was its own republic. The Republic of Texas Museum educates visitors about how Texas was settled and its years as an independent republic. The exhibits cover everything from pioneers to cowboys.

Despite the name, the Texas Memorial Museum is dedicated to natural history, not wars. Located on the University of Texas campus, this museum exhibits findings from the past 70 years in geology, biology and paleontology. Specimens found in Texas are spotlighted, along with fossils, gems and wildlife from across the United States.

Only in Austin
The Austin Children's Museum gives kids of all ages an interactive, hands-on approach to the museum scene. Their rotating series of exhibits often features the work of local artists, inventors and educators. Some of the perennial exhibits include a Tinkers Workshop and the Global City with a play restaurant and market.

O. Henry spent time in Austin when he was known as William Sidney Porter, developing his writing and there is a museum here preserving the house where he stayed. The O. Henry Museum celebrates the life and work of this famous American author.

Of course Austin would find a way to combine music and museums. The Texas Music Museum has been celebrating the music scene for the last 25 years with photos and artifacts. Visitors can even be entertained by live music programs throughout the year.

The fine arts are given a feminine twist at the Women and Their Work Museum. The goal of this free museum is to give support and a platform to women artists from all over Texas.

Austin Art Scene
The Austin Museum of Art has two locations, one downtown and its original home, Laguna Gloria. These two art museums celebrate the innovation and collaboration of artists of all mediums in an informal setting.

The University of Texas' Blanton Museum of Art is one of the most extensive university art collections in the country. The Blanton has a more formal setting than the Austin Museum of Art and houses more than 18,000 works of art in two buildings. From European oil paintings to Latin American sculptures, visitors could spend an entire day at the Blanton.

The Julia C. Butridge Gallery at the Dougherty Art Center features the work of Austin artists across the spectrum of mediums. This museum aims to celebrate and nurture the accomplishments of local artists, many of them former students.
