Atlanta?s City Gallery At Chastain

The City Gallery at Chastain is a Buckhead area art gallery located in Chastain Park, Atlanta?s largest city park. The City of Atlanta?s Office of Cultural Affairs sponsors a rotating schedule of exhibitions at the gallery. Visitors will find exhibits of contemporary art from emerging artists in this little known gem on Atlanta?s north side.

The gallery also showcases some of the artwork of instructors and students at the adjacent Chastain Arts Center. The Arts Center offers classes for adults in drawing, painting, fabric arts, printmaking, ceramics, jewelry making, and metalsmithing. There are also summer art camp programs for children and teens. An annual spring art show and sale makes some of these items available for purchase.

The current summer 2012 exhibition features the work of photographer Radcliffe Roye. The exhibition, entitled ?J?Ouvert: At the Devil?s Playground,? is presented in partnership with the National Black Arts Festival in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Jamaica?s independence. This is Radcliffe Roye?s first Atlanta exhibition. Roye is a self taught Jamaican born documentary photographer, now based in Brooklyn, New York. His photo journalism is inspired by the crusty lives of grass-roots people, and he strives to tell their stories of trials and victories through his photographer?s lens. He has been exhibiting his work since 2001. ?At the Devil?s Playground? is a collection of images that evoke memories from Roye?s childhood. J?Ouvert is the start of Carnival celebrations in Jamaica, and the exhibition conjures up the childhood images of colorful and scary Carnival effigies that frightened Roye and other youngsters. The exhibition opened on June 14 and will run through July 28. Radcliffe Roye will give a special artist talk on June 30 from 1-3pm.

The second summer exhibition will be ?Pressing Matters III,? which will begin on August 9 and is scheduled to run through September 29. This is the annual members? exhibition of the Atlanta Printmakers Studio. The exhibition will showcase works that utilize traditional printmaking processes, and many of the pieces will be offered for sale. Members of the Atlanta Printmaking Studio will also be exhibiting works this summer at Hambridge Center in Rabun Gap, Georgia and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia in Atlanta.

The City Gallery at Chastain is located at 135 Wieuca Road in Chastain Park. The gallery is open Monday-Friday from 9:30am-5pm and Saturday from 10am-3pm. It is closed on Sundays. The exhibitions are free and open to the public.
